The Banaras Hindu University will hold an all India written entrance test for admission to Ayurveda Vachaspati [MD(Ay)]/Ayurveda
Dhanwantri [MS(Ay)] course [in the subjects – Kayachikitsa, Prasuti Tantra & Stree Roga, Shalya Tantra, Sangyaharan, Kaumarbhritya-Balroga,
Shalakya Tantra-Netra Roga, Dravyaguna Vigyan, Rasa Shastra, Swasthbrita, Sharir Kriya, Ayurveda Siddhanta, Ayurveda Samhita, Sharir Rachana, Roga Nidana evam Vikriti Vigyana ] on Sunday, the 21stJune, 2009 on its Campus.
ELIGIBILITY: Qualification (a) BAMS recognized by CCIM. (b) MBBS recognized by MCI (for supernumerary category only). (c) The
candidate must have completed 12 months rotating internship (4 ½ years BAMS course) / 6 months rotating internship (5 years BAMS course) by
31.07.2009. AGE-The Upper age limit for admission will be 35 years for General and OBC Category and 40 years for SC/ST on 31.07.2009. There
is no age limit for Sponsored Category.
Application form along with information brochure can either be downloaded from website (www.bhu.ac.in & www.imsbhu.nic.in) or can be obtained
from the office of the Director, Institute of Medical Sciences, BHU, Varanasi-221005 on or before 04.04.09 by sending a written request through
Registered Post along with a demand draft (MICR) of Rs. 100/-drawn in favour of the Director, IMS, BHU, payable at Varanasi along with two self
addressed white paper slips of 10 cm x 6 cm size, between 16.02.09 and 16.04.09. On the envelop please write "Application for MD(Ay)/MS(Ay)
Entrance Test – 2009, BHU". The request for application form by post must reach on or before 04.04.09.
The last date for submission of completed application form accompanied by DD/Banker’s Cheque (MICR) of Rs. 1000/-(Rs 750 /-for SC and ST)

Morphology:
It is a small tree and branches end up in thorns. It is found in all arid zones of India. Leaves- compound with two leaflets. Leaves may elliptic or obovate. Flowers- white in closed cymes. Fruit- drupe, 4-5 cm long, 5 grooved, hard, pulpy. Seed- 1 tubercled, hard.
Active ingredients:
Yamogenin glycosides, diosgenin glycosides- belanitine 4-7, nitrogen glucosides, Balagyptin, Kernal contains steroidal saponins.
Properties:
Guna: Laghu, snigdha
Rasa: Tikta, Katu
Vipaka: Katu
Virya: Usna
Prabhava: Krimigna
As it is “usna” in virya, it alleviates Kapha and vata.
The oil, fruits, seeds and bark has anthelmintic effect. Therefore it can be given for conditions like loss of appetite, abdominal pain and for abdominal distension.
Oil is effective in healing burns. It helps to grow hair. Since old times, this oil has been using as a wound healer.
It is a blood purifier. Therefore effective in many skin diseases.
With the expectorant effect, it is used respiratory tract infections.
Diuretic effect benefits in dysuria.
It is a detoxifier.
Usable parts:
Bark, fruits, seeds, seed oil, leaves.
Dosage
Decoction- 50-100ml
Powder- 3-6g
Fruit pulp- 3-6g
Seed oil- 5-10 drops
Formulations: Ingudi thilam
Research:
Fruit pulp extract on IV administration produced a triphasic response which consisted of initial brief fall, followed by brief rise and then prolonged fall in BP of anesthetized dogs and cats. LD50 in mice was 5.89g/kg (oral) and 0.33g/kg. (i.p.)- (J. Res. Ay. & Siddha 1986,7,47).
Aqueous extract of fruits showed spermicidal activity without local vaginal irritation in human up to concentration of 4%; sperms became sluggish on contact with plant extract and then immobile within 30s. The effect was concentration related. (Ind.j.Pharmacology 1990, 22, 262).
